Lev Vladimirovich Kuleshov and The Moscow Film School Essay
When film first started gaining popularity, it wantââ¬â¢s as obvious that be connecting two different images, we would assume their relation. Film simply document events that occurred, it wasnââ¬â¢t until the enterprising pioneers of early cinema took hold that they began to manipulate their audience into following a story their way and feeling it in those exact steps. Lev Vladimirovich Kuleshov a Soviet filmmaker and film theorist in the 1920s who taught at and helped establish the worldââ¬â¢s first film school, the Moscow Film School. He was one of the very first film theorists and one the great pioneers of early editing regarded amongst worldwide filmmaker and he is famous for what became known as Soviet Montage. Kulsehov experimented with this and achieved the Kulsehov theory. This technique is known as juxtaposition, one the most effective tools on cinema just by juxtaposing a variety of concepts one can get a funny joke across, or complete lie across the audience. Kuleshov coined the term collective geography to describe cinema ability to link entirely unrelated material into coherent sequences. This discovery provided filmmakers with arms of varies techniques to manipulate the audience but in this they also recognized the audience has an active in creating meaning. Kuleshov was not just concerned with editing; he believed that the key to effective filmmaking was in organization. In addition to his theoretical work, Kulsehov was also a director of many feature films and he was a leader in Soviet montage theory, which was an approach to understanding and creating cinema that relies heavily upon editing. Some consider Kulsehov the father of Soviet Cinema, having been the first to publish about the formal possiblites of the medium and the power of montage editing. A montage is French for assembly or edit, it involves pieces of footage to make a film. During the Russian Revolution Kuleshov documented the war on the Eastern Front in documentary on the Red Front in the 1920s. Around that time, Kuleshov was deeply impressed and
Similarities Between The Truman Show And Animal Farm
The texts Animal Farm by George Orwell and The Truman Show directed by Peter Weir examine the ideas of power, the good life and utopia. In the novel Animal Farm, Orwell narrates the progression of animals engaging in a rebellion against their owner, who mistreats them. In the Film, the Truman show, Weir chronicles the progressive advancement of Trumanââ¬â¢s freedom, for the reason that he is trapped in a fantasy world. Both Orwell and Weir address the two texts in a similar way. The passages correspondingly explore the themes of what makes a good life, power and control, what it is and who possesses it, as well as a utopian society and whether it is achievable or not. In The Truman Show, Weir demonstrates what the good life is, and what itâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦One example would be the power that Mr. Jones has, to control the animals. The pigs get corrupted by power due to their significant amount of it. So much so that ââ¬Å"The work was strictly voluntary, and any animal who absented himself from it would have his rations reduced by halfâ⬠. (pg 59) Likewise in Truman Show, Peter Weir also suggests that Power is the ability to have control over others. One example would be the fact that Christof ââ¬Å"The creatorâ⬠manufactured a complex web of emotional manipulation in order to keep Truman on Seahaven Island. A second example would be the power that Truman has over peopleââ¬â¢s emotions.Truman is incredibly important to a lot of people throughout the world, in many cases to an unhealthy extent. So if he is having a bad day it would negatively affect their mood. Both Orwell and Weir suggest that power is the ability to have control over others, their emotions and influence them. They also give the audience the impression that one can never be satisfied with the amount of power they have. In Truman Show, Peter Weir explores the idea that a utopian society is Unachievable. Of course all of the people start acting odd when Truman starts catching onto what is happening in his world but the way society functioned before the drama was perfectly fake nonetheless. George Orwell shows similar views on what a Utopia looks like but in contrast, Animal Farm starts off with awful conditions that are enforced by Farmer Jones which then change when the animals overthrow him. The text shows a utopia functioning perfectly early on in the novel, with everyone working together to collect an abundance of food. George Orwell also helps us see how perfect the animals society is by make it contrast against the living conditions from earlier. The animals put together simple laws to keep them in check and overall, they lead a perfect life together. And just like in The Truman Show, the perfect society falls apart just as fast as it was put together. But what goes wrong in both texts? An increase in total value of assets with value of net profit remaining same indicates that there will be reduction in return on assets as they are not utilized efficiently for generating profits. An increase in value of assets with profit remaining same will generate lower debt equity ratio and therefore, there will be higher return on equity. Therefore, the value of ROE and ROA is determined by the total value of assets and total value of equity. From the above table, it can be seen that return on equity (ROE) is greater than return on assets (ROA) for all the four years. Both the concepts depict the efficiency of organization in using resources for generating assets. Return on equity is less than return on assets because of lower value of total ordinary equities compared to total value of assets. A healthy organization always has total value of assets more than total equity because the values of assets are more than equity when liabilities of organization have reduced (Danes et al. 2016). Conservative investment is a type of investment where the return is nit fluctuated and they guarantee to investors a given amount of return. When looking at beta value of Oz Minerals that stands at 0.65 is indicative of the fat that excess return of stock is expected to perform .45 worse than expected return of market that is index. Low beta value depicts that investment is conservative as the market related risk is low. Performance of company is associated with mining stocks and price of minerals compared to overall stock market (Thomas et al. 2015). Therefore the company has chosen a conservative investment strategy. Weighted average cost of capital: Particulars Amount Weight age Cost Return Rate Tax Rate WACC Total Long Term Debt 101.5 4.13% 4.8 4.73% 30.00% 0.14% Total Equity 2354.3 95.87% 5.30% 5.08% TOTAL 2455.8 100% 5.22% Weighted average cost of capital is the composite cost of capital that helps in evaluation of new projects that are undertaken by company. The estimation of expected cost by company is done by using WACC for financing sources of investment. Cost of capital is the discount rate that is used by company for the purpose of calculations of their capital budgeting. It helps in evaluating the returns generated by any project and whether they are sufficient for risks compensation. Higher WACC is indication of the fact that higher risk is associated with operation of company and hence investors seek additional return in return for undertaking additional level of risks (Peirson et al. 2014). Therefore, management of organization evaluates the higher weighted cost of capital to be associated with carrying higher level of risk and hence investors seeking higher return for compensation the additional level of risks that they are undertaking Debt ratios for the past two years: The computation if debt ratio for the past three years has been shown in the above table. It can be seen that debt ratio for 0.066 in year 2014 and .087 in year 2015 respectively. It can be seen that debt ratio has increased in year 2015. Now, looking at figure for year 2016, debt ratio stood at .105 and this is indicative of the fact that level of debt ratio has been increasing for the past three to four years as illustrated by figures. Therefore, it can be concluded that debt ratio value has not been stable. Looking at the capital structure of company, it can be seen that value of assets have been increasing throughout, however, total liabilities initially decreased and then it is increased subsequently. It appears that organization is not working on maintaining a preferred optimal capital structure. At year ending 31st December, Oz Minerals does not have any borrowings and at the end of year, consolidated entity has undrawn borrowings. On February, 2016, organization has made an announcement of program of an on market share buyback program. Oz minerals completed a share buyback of $ 29.9 million of a $ 60 million share through the program (ozminerals.com 2018). There was a repurchasing of shares of total amount of $ 4.8 million at an average share price of $ 6.23. Implementing the dividend policy as prescribed by principles of Australian stock exchange and corporation act has been dine for maintaining compliance so that they are not facing compliance issues (MAcc 2017). Letter of recommendation: Dear ABC, Queensland Australia Respected Sir, After conducting detailed analysis of financial performance of Oz minerals in terms of their debt structure, leverage, share price, I would like to present my view on forming this company as a part of your investment portfolio. Looking the ratios computed, it can be seen that ROE and ROA is increasing and has been stable in these few years. Debt ratio has increased indicating increase in total liabilities, but this is not unfavorable for investors seeking investment. This is so because organization has employed conservative strategy and hence it will not be risky for investors including it in their portfolio of stocks. In recent years, price of shares have also increased 6.39 for year ending 2016 and increasing to 8.8 for year ending 2017. This increase can be regarded as significant for investors to be included in their investment portfolio. Moreover, looking at beta and weighted average cost of capital for Oz minerals, it can be seen that investing is not risky and stock would be generating reasonable return. Therefore, I would recommend Mr ABC to include Oz minerals to in his/her investment portfolio. Thanking you, ABC Investment Company References Bekaert, G. and Hodrick, R., 2017. Community Development and Human Dignity
Question: Discuss about the Community Development and Human Dignity. Answer: Introduction The term human dignity means behaving and respecting other people in ways that make them feel, important and valued (Hartman Kiely, 2014). This is irrespective of their religion, race, gender, capacities or other traits that make people different. Community development is a profession that involves social work. Community development is a way of working with communities to increase their ability and capacity to find solutions of their own to issues that they encounter with. Concerns to do with human dignity are what community developers do on a daily basis. Community developers in the in the course of their caring and professional relationships with associates, poor and other clients and complete strangers, they are supposed to treat each and every life that is touched by every human life that is part of their activities with dignity. Dignity is one of the essential values that drive the community development profession. Other values include service to humanity, social justice, compe tence and integrity (Hugman, 2013). Working with indigenous communities is a unique role undertaken by community developers since many of the indigenous communities struggle with problems which are enormous. The problems that community developers face are challenging, and intervention at individual level becomes necessary. For instance, when a child from an indigenous community comes to the community developer attention at the child protection service, then the community developer has to decide what to do. This occurs when the child looks underfed, is of ill health and the living standards at home are poor. The most significant thing that the community developer should do is to ensure that the child is safe and meets their interests. In practice, this means that the community developer is in addition to dealing with the child also should scrutinize their parents concerns in a broader social and community patterns. In a situation like this, there is a likelihood that the employment opportunities in the community are few , alcohol consumption is high which results in violence making the cycle of a cycle of destruction restart all over again. It is the role of community developers to help communities find the strengths and solutions which are consistent with human rights (Hartman Kiely, 2014). There are interventions that community developers should consider to find solutions to protect children from indigenous children (Hartman Kiely, 2014). One of the ways is to consult the communities their opinion on how the problem may be solved. This enables community developers to understand what the people in a community want so as to know the measures that one can take. Some people may bring an argument that the end justifies the means and that community developers need to act immediately to stop any violence against child abuse that comes to their attention (Hugman, 2013). This means that community participation and consultation get forgotten and are time-consuming or disregarded intentionally. However, community developers in such a case believe that the ends do not simply justify the means. One thing we can learn from good community development is that the process is equally important to the outcome because communities learn to solve their issues (Cecilia Deneulin, 2012). Community development profession addresses issues related to indigenous communities and people in various ways now and the future. Today community development curriculum spends a lot of time identifying skills for working with indigenous communities and people in the context of social, historical, cultural and economic considerations. Future community developers will well verse with problems that indigenous clients encounter and will be able to identify a way to solve them (Lee, Kjaerulf, Turner, Cohen, Donnelly, Muggah, Waller, 2016). Today more indigenous people are joining the community development profession, and this is encouraging since they are accessible to their communities which certainly will result in a positive attitude toward the profession. In the future community, developers need to enhance partnership with indigenous communities and people since they clearly understand human rights and issues of their communities better than everyone else. Today Community developers are finding ways to deal with abuse and violence among indigenous communities. Some of these ways are counselling services and community development program. The stories used to educate the communities are inspiration and communities learn valuable lessons. However, these forums do not help communities deal with child abuse and family violence which occur day to day sand this need to be considered by the social workers in future (Swanepoel Beer, 2012). Conclusion Human rights based community development there helps in maintain human dignity especially to indigenous communities and people. International law recognizes the rights of indigenous people without discrimination. It also states that without the collective rights of indigenous people being recognized indigenous people can never be equal and free. This is the point in which community developers can offer support to these communities by empowering them. References Cecilia Dinerstein, A., Deneulin, S. (2012). Free Market Defense Essays - Classical Liberalism, Sociology Books
Free Market Defense Ludwig von Mises: Defender of the Free Market Ludwig von Misis thoughts on human behavior, socialism, and money and credit have had a major impact on economic thought. He championed true free markets and is seen as a defender of liberty. Former President of the United States Ronald Reagan said "Ludwig von Mises was one of the greatest economic thinkers in the history of Western Civilization. Through his seminal works, he rekindled the flames of liberty. As a wise and kindly mentor, he encourages all who sought to understand the meaning of freedom. We owe him an incalculable debt"(Mises Institute). The remainder of this paper will outline the life of Ludwig von Mises. This will be accomplished by describing the social, political, technical, and economic environment that influenced his ideas. A description of his major ideas in economic thought will be presented. Next, the people and ideas that influenced his approach to economics will be addressed. Finally, the paper will conclude with an assessment of Ludwig von Mises contributions to economic thought. Overview of the Life of Ludwig von Mises Ludwig von Misis was born on September 29, 1881 in Lemberg, Austria. He attended a private elementary school, the public Akademishe Gymnasium in Vienna from1892 to 1900. In 1900 Mises entered the University of Vienna. On February 20,1906 he received a Dr. Jur degree, a Doctor of both Canon and Roman Laws, from the University of Vienna. When Mises attended the University, it had no separate economics department; the only way to study economics was through law (Mises Institute). From 1907 to 1914 Mises was employed as an advisor to the Austrian Chamber of Commerce. His first major thesis, the Theory of Money and Credit was published in 1912. In 1913 Mises was awarded the position of Privatdozent (unsalaried lecturer) at the University of Vienna (Mises Institute). Mises' academic pursuits were interrupted from 1914 to 1918 due to World War I. After World War I Mises returned to the University of Vienna and his position at the Austrian Chamber of Commerce. His next major thesis, Socialism, came in 1922. In 1934 Mises accepted a position as Professor of International Economic Relations at the Graduate Institute of International Studies, in Geneva, Switzerland. Even though he bad left Vienna to accept this position in Switzerland, Mises did work for the Austrian Chamber of Commerce on a part-time basis until Hitler's annexation of Austria in March 1938 (Mises Institute). On July 6, 1938 Ludwig von Mises married Margit Sereny in Geneva. Ludwig von Mises immigrated to the United States in 1940 arriving in New York on August 2. In the United States Mises taught as a Visiting Professor at the University of New York from 1945 to 1969. He also traveled to Central and South America giving lectures from 1942 to 1959. In 1949 Mises published his crowning achievement Human Action. This treatise summarized his thoughts on economics. Through out the rest of his life Mises received several distinguished awards. On October 10, 1973 Ludwig von Mises passed away at St. Vincent Hospital in New York City. Factors Influencing Ludwig von Mises Ideas The major influence on Ludwig von Mises ideas was the Austrian school of economic thought. The political and economic events that influenced Mises included two world wars and an extended worldwide depression. In the political turmoil after World War I, the main theoretician of the now socialist Austrian government was Marxist Otto Bauer. Mises had befriended Bauer during his school years and the two often discussed economics and politics. Mises explained economics to him night after night, eventually convincing him to back away from Bolshevik-style policies (Mises Institute). His actions kept Austria from following to the hyperinflation that the Germans experienced. The prevailing political climate during this time was Socialism. Mises strongly opposed Socialism and its prevalence inspired him to write his next great work Socialism. The Great depression brought about the rise of Keynesian Economics. Mainstream economics embraced Keynesian economics and as a result Mises theory of money and credit was pushed into the background as the cause for business cycles. Political activity in Europe, specifically Hitler's aggression, drove Mises from his homeland and then Europe just before World War II. Mises continued to lecture widely in the United States, Europe and Latin America. He served as economic advisor to the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) from its founding in 1946 until his death. He was appointed a Visiting Professor at New York University Graduate School of Business Administration in 1945 and served there until 1969 (FEE). In his
